Who we are and why we started
In The Wild

ur inspiration (scroll down to see our team) to start this unique charter yacht brokerage came from our encounters with the many boaters and charter yacht crews who have much more to offer their guests than just gourmet food and casual sailing. We've met former professors, wildlife experts, sailing instructors and people with unique local knowledge of the islands who are interested in and capable of leading journeys of discovery combined with complete sailing charter vacations. We also know that there are many people who want something more enriching from their vacation. Thus we started In the Wild Adventures to organize and promote adventurous, educational and otherwise uniquely themed sailing charters.

As certified yacht brokers through the Virgin Islands Charter Yacht League, we attend at least four charter yacht shows in the Caribbean and elsewhere each year. At these shows we inspect the yachts, and meet the crews with whom we work to design and promote our exciting and original trips.

We have had overwhelmingly positive responses from the yacht crews, other brokers, business investors and most importantly, our clients. In the Wild has been described as "refreshing", "inspired", "revolutionary" and "about time"! We are proud of the trips we offer and of the yachts we represent, and are certain that you will love our sailing vacations.

We are located in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, right in the heart of the charter industry and have easy access to the yachts and local information. Jill Mara is the Owner of In the Wild. She is a sailor and motor boater and has a sincere love of adventure and wildlife. She has a graduate degree in Education (curriculum design) and an undergraduate degree in Broadcast Journalism and Communications.

Jill also owns and operates Wahoo Productions, a full service video production company specializing in creating promotional and documentary videos and stock footage of whales, sailing, fishing and Caribbean scenery. In 1998 she started, and has recently sold, In the Wild Productions, a video company that records whale watch trips in Cape Cod, MA. She has amassed the most extensive library of whale footage in the North East and now sells the stock footage through Wahoo Productions.

Jill's entrepreneurial leadership, attention to detail and devotion to her products and customers are driving forces of In the Wild's success.

Captain Eugene Smith has joined the In The Wild team as our resident water sports and local knowledge guide. Born in Puerto Rico and raised in the Virgin Islands, he brings a vast knowledge of the local culture, flora, fauna and secret places. The islands and surrounding waters have been his playground and he has taken advantage of all the water sports offered in these warm waters. He is a sailor, windsurfer, surfer, kayaker, diver and sport fisherman and is excited to share these passions with others.

Eugene has a degree in Hotel and Restaurant management and has been co-manager of Villa Blanca Hotel since 1994. He also runs a sport fishing operation, Reel Therapy Sport Fishing.

Christopher Hamilton is educational and adventure consultant for In the Wild Adventures and was responsible for much of In The Wild's web site design along with Jill Mara. His contributing ideas stem from his experience as the Marine Science Professor and Coordinator of the SEAmester Program (www.seamester.net) of Long Island University. Twice each year he leads 24 college students on a 9 week educational sailing adventure, aboard the 131' wooden schooner 'Harvey Gamage', throughout the Caribbean and the U.S. Eastern seaboard. Chris has undergraduate and graduate degrees in the earth sciences and has worked at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History and Harvard University's Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology.
